Google demonstrated Google Assistant AI making telephone calls. It sounded very natural, and seemed to handle the call well. It's noted later in the video that there are lots of calls that didn't go so well, so it's a shame they didn't appear to play those.
“The amazing thing is that Assistant can actually understand the nuances of conversation,” he said. “We’ve been working on this technology for many years. It’s called Google Duplex.”

Play the video on the story and you'll see what I mean.

From a technical perspective, this is excellent, but for the future, this might just be another worrying trend.

Personally, if I realised it was an AI I don't yet know how i'd handle it as i'd be talking to a machine. OTOH, some of the phone spammers working to a script sound just like machines. lol

Why are we teaching these things so much?

Doesn't anyone there read those sci-fi stories where the machines exterminate humanity?

I spend so much time trying to get "Ummm" out of my kid's conversations and google is teaching it's AI to include it...

Within the next year all google's AI will be able to do is eat, sleep, and post selfies on it's snapchat story.

I wonder how this verse in Bob Dylan's "Talking World War III Blues" would have been written if he'd been talking to Google Assistant:

I was feeling kind of lonesome and blue
I needed somebody to talk to
So I called up the operator of time
Just to hear a voice of some kind
“When you hear the beep it will be three o’clock”
She said that for over an hour
And I hung up

There's been some clarification from Google and it now seems the AI bot will make disclosure it's a bot.

Currently it is very limited very structured. Of course so is most first level real human customer support required to reply using query reply tree structures. And that in itself is a large lucrative market that could scale viably with such a backend.

Not sure if call centres going silicon improves their service level but it would change who/where the money goes while boosting the bottom line.
