According to analysts in a report on Reuters, both Amazon and google are fighting it out for share of the voice controlled speaker market, and both were heavily discounting their products in the holiday season.
Apple looks late to the party, but is sure to grab a share of the market from the Apple households.

Think of all those voice searches they are fighting for!

I'm sure they can count of a fairly large base of Apple disciples who are always happy to fork out money for Apple's latest shiny new thing. Not sure that base is as large as before (especially after their recent investments in the new iPhone). I wonder what their future plans are for iTunes via Google Home/Alexa and what they plan to do to make it easier/better/cheaper to access iTunes from their devices instead of their competitors'. (And what impact, if any, the demise of Net Neutrality has on those plans.)

In 2016, we gave my parents a Google Home for Christmas. When we up there this past year, my mom said she couldn't get it to play music any more. I asked her what she was trying. She said she was just telling it to play music. So I asked her to tell me specifically what she was saying. She replied, "Alexa, play music."

Big selling point for google home is that you can use it to easily navigate your google plus account.

While Alexa is a fine product, the current limitations are held to Amazon properties. This will likely change in the future as Amazon continues to morph into other markets.

Google Home has farther reaching tentacles with Chromestick and the Chrome browser. I use Home in my music studio to control 80% of the inline devices... and it can be tweaked to do even more.

Not really looking to argue one over the other but, Firetv/stick and several browsers.

Side note, just looked at my website in the new Silk browser on Firetv for the first time ever, that was fun. More things to through at the design department. Never wondered what the site would look like on a 70 tablet, now I know...
