Skype has announced a new desktop version of the communications tool which looks far more like the mobile version of the software.

It's becoming far more of a social business and personal tool, with missed call notifications, an improved notification panel, managing mentions in group chats, reactions to messages.

If you've got Windows 10 auto update, you'll get the new Skype at the next scheduled update. Mac, Win 7 or Win 8, and Linux.

I removed Skype from Windows 10. It was always trying to connect to some remote server. So far it has stayed removed over the last couple updates. Wonder if this upcoming update will inject Skype back since it is a new build.

I haven't updated just yet as I thought i'd wait and see how others get on.

I used Skype temporarily for remote teaching a few years back. Granted, it was the old UI, but although many do use it for edu, I found it awkward. Besides the obvious lack of physical connection, there were assorted set-up & connection latency glitches disrupting playing music with someone remotely in real time.

I'm sure many of those issues have been dealt with, but I'm no longer looking for more work, so I guess I'll never know of any improvements for my uses.

I'll probably take a look and connect to a few friends after the update (if it gets reinstalled) though.
