And then there was the year I showed up in Norway on the way to visit relatives, and was mystified to find everything closed. That was when I learned that the rest of the planet takes its Labor Day on May Day.

While Labor Day always gets the Gov't agencies closed (banks, DMV, Post Office, etc) hardly anyone else closes their doors.
It was started to honor the American labor movement, but most people I know just think of it as a day to not work.

For a long time most US states started their school year the day after Labor Day. California used to start after Admission Day--a now-defunct holiday, 9 September--so it tended to run a week later. The best timing was {major university which shall remain nameless} that started* most classes on a Thursday near the end of August, but one class required of all freshmen didn't start until the first full week. Which is to say on Labor Day, when all department offices were closed because administrative employees (the great Staff vs. Faculty distinction) took federal holidays. Now there's a bright idea.
(For people outside the US: We don't have national holidays. There are Federal holidays and State holidays. Any given entity may take one, the other or both.)
