Just watched Ron Howard's 'Rush' about the 1976 World Grand Prix rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauder and England's James Hunt.

I thought it was well done and kept to the 1976 specs AFAIK. They were discussing 470hp at a top speed of 170mph which doesn't sound like much nowadays.

I know there's more than a couple racing enthusiasts here. Anyone else see this flick?

Oh yes, i've seen it several times, and it's an excellent movie, fairly close to the true story.

The two were complete opposites, and both big personalities, but, again, in different ways. JH was a maverick, and the last of the true playboy drivers in F1. NL was the consummate professional, and technically very knowledgeable. Some poetic licence involved, but definitely a good real-life story of rivalry. Ron Howard did a great job with it, imho. Even if you're not a motor racing enthusiast, it's a movie worth watching.

Yes, it's not huge power compared to today, but the torque was phenomenal. Remember, the F1 cars are particularly good at going around corners at speed. Straight line speed, although important, is not everything compared the overall lap time.

F1 is probably the most regulated of all racing sports, which is kind of fun, putting it on the DRIVER to be the difference, and while track speeds have come up to 233mph in recent years, the tracks are still called ROAD RACE TOURING where the skill and endurance of the driver taking up to 6g turns (realm of fighter aircraft) is the difference, not the machine. F1 is the nearest one can get to flying without leaving the ground.

The RUSH movie was okay, but the Steve McQueen Le Mans was better drama. :)

Came here thinking the thread was discussing the documentary about Rush (the band)...

Ages ago, what 3+ years?

I actually watched them filming the "new" track stuff at my local racing circuit, Cadwell Park only 5 miles down the road, it was very interesting to watch them and then see the action in the film, it was completely different, hats off to Ron Howard etc.

And I thought it was going to be about the band as well:-)

What made me look was the similarity to a radio talk show host. :)
