Ransomeware payouts are reaching levels of $25 million, or more, according to researchers Google, Chainalysis, UC San Diego, and the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.

Clearly, it's lucrative to the attackers, and a lot safer than robbing a bank.

By following those payments through the blockchain and comparing them against known samples, researchers were able to build a comprehensive picture of the ransomware ecosystem. Ransomware Payouts Reach More than $25 Million [theverge.com]

Of course, the figures may be much more than this, but either way, it's still a significant sum.

I use HitManPro Alert. Doesn't use signatures, but monitors behavior. Used to be a SurfRight product but is now a Sophos product. I've been using it for two years. So far I've kept my share of the $25 million in my pocket.
