According to statcounter, Android has come very close to surpassing Windows as the world's most popular operating system across desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile when combined.

February 2017 shows that Windows was it 38.6% while Android was at 37.4%.

“The idea of Android almost matching Windows would have been unthinkable five years ago,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. “In January 2012 Windows held 82% global internet usage share compared to just 2.2% for Android.”

"Windows 10 will need to maintain momentum in order to combat the steady march of Android across all markets,” added Aodhan Cullen. "

My impression is that the entire population of India uses Androids, so that's a billion right there.

If I look at my site usage stats for 2017 ytd.
39% iOS,
26.9% Android,
24.6% Windows.
7% Macintosh
1% Chrome OS

Overall my traffic is 73% US, 6% Canada and 4% UK.
60% mobile

I looks to me like in the US Apple is leading.

I want names!

Deceiving though, as many UA strings identify as Safari iOS but aren't.

i very nearly bought a windows laptop the other day, but was put off when i found out they've started inserting adverts for other apps and products all over it -- even inside your Start menu.
having adverts inside apps is one thing, but on the actual OS itself? who's bright idea was that?
bought an apple laptop instead

I have several Windows machines/laptops (all up-to-date) and have never seen an advert.

I do see endless Apple adverts on TV.

Where did you see those?

I have seen apps that are baked in and cannot be uninstalled. That's a bad move, imho. Eventually, I managed to hide the icon for the uninstallable app.

Microsoft is so busy copying Android it's lost sight of what gives it the advantage, imho.

not impressive at all, android is given away free on any device.

Would be like saying nokia is killing MS in the early 00's
