Staying with the US Digital Service
January 18, 2017

Matt Cutts posted today, on his blog and on Twitter...
When I joined the US Digital Service, I only planned to stay for three months. That quickly turned into six months after I saw the impact of the USDS. In the last month, I made a big decision. On December 31, 2016, I resigned from Google. I’m currently serving as director of engineering for the USDS.

It's official... Matt Cutts has left Google and, with great generosity of spirit and no increase in pay, he is staying on with the US Digital Service... which he clearly feels is vitally important to the country... "a chance to work on things that genuinely make peoples’ lives better".

Personally, I've missed Matt at Google, but I'm grateful that he's now doing what he's doing in the USDS.

At the outset, he single-handedly created the webmaster outreach program at Google that is unlikely to be seen ever again.

I'm not surprised by the news, and I wish Matt great success in his career.

I have always known Matt to be a genuinely good man. He's turning his talents toward helping make a difference in his fellow citizens lives. This is a reaffirmation of that spirit of goodness. I'm grateful for his decision and wish him happiness.

We all have bosses and if we work at a for-profit company we need to sometimes follow company policy even if we disagree. Matt was a big resource to the SEOs even if we loved to hate him sometimes ... ok most of the time. Matt was a more than a capable adversary who truly cared about the industry. He personally paid his own way to many conferences and spent countless nights, weekends and holidays giving real advice to many webmasters. He has been missed.

To honor his legacy let's go spam some .gov domains with dirty adult links! :)

Hi Matt,

My warmest congratulations to you on your new job as director of engineering for the USDS. Hopefully you would still have time to post about fun moments with Emmy and Ozzie :)

To honor his legacy

Heavens, goodroi, the man hasn't died. He's just gone to work for a Company Other Than Google.

I'll remember Cutts as the "face of google" that actually tried to interface with the "rest of us". For the most part he did better than journeyman's work in that regard, but he always worked for the firm and in that regard, never shared thee deep secrets that would have made a very big difference in how "the web worked".

Thanks for what was shared, Matt, and we understand the restraints due to job description.

Thanks for all the useful (and sometimes not so useful) insight and information through the years. The SEO community is a better place thanks to GoogleGuy ;)

All the best to Matt.
