You're arriving at a site through a social media link, or news story, or a search, and you start reading the article. All good so far. However, within a few seconds (often less) there's a popup inviting your to subscribe to their newsletter which covers the content.

Come on, i've not even had time to digest the story and information to make a decision to subscribe. In most circumstances like this, I back out of the site by closing the browser window almost immediately.

Odd, I do the same thing. I may be wrong, but I can't imagine that people do sign up before actually deciding to do so. It is increasing from what I see.

Yes, they blast right past popup blockers as if they weren't even there. Popup blockers need to be reworked.

"No thanks, I want to stay fat". I'm exaggerating (or am I?) but the links to close these popups are often similarly phrased. No doubt it works to improve conversions, but so did the old pop-ups. I also back out immediately, out of principe; there's usually other sites with similar content that don't get in my way.

The ones I really hate are the mobile over-the-page ads that also pop-up a couple seconds after I start to read. They are a little too large for my phone's screen, so in order to close the ad I must use my thumb to slide the ad to the left to find the X, often activating the ad.
