A song just came on my co-worker's Pandora stream that brought back some memories.

When we first started out our business, we had our server at a co-location facility in Canada. Over the course of 5+ years, I obviously had to call sometimes for tech support. And sometimes had to sit on hold for an extended period while they ran back and forth to check/fix things (no phone where the servers were). During that entire period (and probably still today), they only had *1* song on an endless loop for the on-hold music. Seriously?

I'm probably the only person in the world who can get stressed out listening to an Enya song. :)

I had the unfortunate experience of spending time on the customer service line of a major retailer. Their incompetence and inability to supply, or communicate meant that I had to be determined to resolve an issue on this chargeable phone line. Not chargeable on my phone service, but others may have to pay.

Needless to say, after around two hours on their customer dis-service [sic] line, over a few days, I was absolutely sick of their on-hold music and the pathetic interruptions of "your call is important to us..."
I don't even remember the Muzak as I became deaf to it. No variety, just a short loop of some junk put together to fill the gaps in time. Not even Greensleves or Four Seasons, it was truly horrible, manufactured tat, frequently interrupted by the obsequious, disinterested female announcer.
How this company remains in business I do not know.

I feel better now! :)

Setting things up so everyone hangs up on your customer service line before a complaint can actually be lodged ... sounds like a pretty solid business model to me.

Hey, I made a good living back in the 1990's writing jingles for customers on hold. Each ran 180 seconds in groups of three .... and their promise was to speak to the customer before the loop started again. Have no idea if that promise was kept. I know I never listened to them as I demanded a straight voice line while conducting business. As I told them, all of my hours are billable and they don't want to pay me to be on hold.
