Try 'Devdas' or 'Lagaan'. They were both nominated for best foreign film in previous Oscars. They are a higher quality then most other ones.

Oh. Those aren't science fiction movies though. I would hate to see what an Indian science fiction film would look like.

Bagat Singh is good as well although again its not a sci fi film.

I'll ask my Indian friend if he knows any :)

Sci-Fi Indian movie? I don't think Bollywood would ever produce such movies - no scope for song & dance, running around trees sequences. Hard to imagine a little green man from Mars singing a song for his lover (little green woman from Mars). ;)

Check the Google directory on Hindi Movies [directory.google.com] - read the movie reviews before you purchase a CD/DVD.

I don't know what your tastes are... One of the great filmmakers of all time was Satyajit Ray. He made films mostly in black and white in the 60s and 70s, in the classic humanist tradition, and for me he's way up there with Renoir, Truffaut, and Kurosawa. His films, almost all in Bengali, are very different from the Bollywood films, which are in Hindi....

The Apu trilogy ("Pather Panchali," "Aparajito," and "The World of Apu") is probably Ray's greatest achievement. "Devi," "Charulata," "The Music Room," "Two Daughters," and "Distant Thunder" are also among Ray's films that I'd recommend. Sony restored some of the films about five years ago, and these are available on video. The rest are probably pretty hard to find.

A few which have brought smiles and tears over the years:

Kabhie Kabhie
Deewar
Sholay (all time great)
Shaheede Mohabbat

none of them are science fiction though.

and yes, the above poster is correct, when he says music is part of the hindi movie scene.

Only 'Lagaan' was nominated , 'Devdas' didnt made it .I will recommend 'Lagaan' - Songs and Choreography are Brilliant ... I think some cable channel ( starz?) aired 'Lagaan' sometime before ...

If any of you are interested Turner Classic is going to start a 12 Film "Bollywood Series" beginning June 5 at 8 p.m EST.

[turnerclassicmovies.com...]

IMHO , Their 12-film collection is not the best though :) ... but watch for two partiular movies in the list .

"RANGEELA" - Songs are simply superb ( but a very ordinary movie!) . Rangeela's Songs are done by composer A R Rahman (who has sold more albums than Madonna and Britney Spears put together)

"DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE " - a classic bolywood style boy meet girl type love story :) ...

Weblamer2...
I love Indian Movies,I will reel lot of stats for you.

In a normal indian city there will be roughly 50 theaters each with 500 seaters. For a day they will have 4 shows roughly 2000 people in each theater. So if you calculate,100,000 people watch movies per day in one single city.

If you take atleast minimum of 75 cities....then you 100,000 * 75

That's 7,500,000 -per day Indian Movie Watchers. This if you calculate for a month then 30* 7,500,000 = 220,500,000 per month then if you calculate for 2 months then it is 441,000,000 per summer movie watchers in India.

It produces films in 14 different languagues. Each friday there will be typically 2 movies per language..that makes 28 movies a week.So if you to choose watching movies from India then you have wide variety and cross section of movies to choose from.

As for Bollywood it produces movies in Indian National Languague called Hindi. If you meant Indian movie to be Hindi movie then you have thousands to choose from. But you meant any Indian Movie then you have to be more speicific in Language.

As per science fiction..there a very few to choose from.I hardly have remember .....Indian Movies Speciallize in social and Family Values. I belive Indian movies are best Entertainers. They truly make you laugh and leave you entertained at the end.

I will be able to help if you specific abt the languague.

For international audience "Lagaan" is very good film. Science ficton you will have to wait for "Koi mil gaya".

Love story :- "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam"
Action film :- "Sholay"
Classic :- "Mother India"
Silent :- "Pushpak" {amazing movie with no dialogue!)
Unique :- "Appu Raja" (A single guy enacts a role of a normal as well as a stunted growth person)
Good Plot :- "Aankhen" (three blind people rob a bank!)
Black Comedy :- "Jaane bhi do yaroon" (Most non indians won't understand)

would add more if asked for
