If you're into dystopian fiction, and want a great read right now about how a game like this goes very wrong, check out Daemon by Daniel Suarez [goodreads.com].

Personally I'm glad people are having fun, and I think augmented reality has some real potential.

I think augmented reality has some real potential.
Since we all know that real reality has no potential any more. :)

I think it's a sad comment on humanity that it takes a video game to make people get out and get some exercise. But at least this type of "augmented reality" is (hopefully) better than the kind gotten from illicit drugs.

i saw someone coming down the stairs on a bus playing it the other day. i was standing on the stair behind him, we were both waiting to get off, and it looked like he was firing those ball things at people in the bus.

I see many people walking around with a zombie-like stare and their heads bowed towards their smartphone.

I agree with Jake about the potential for augmented reality, but this pokemon thing might just be a craze that will pass by.

Hi there LifeinAsia,
"But at least this type of "augmented reality" is (hopefully)
better than the kind gotten from illicit drugs."

What is your reason for stipulating "illicit"?

Do not "legal" drugs, like alcohol, also "augment reality"?

Of course, it may be my congenital obtuseness that prevents
me from understanding the finer points of your argument. :)

I might argue that alcohol dulls reality rather than augments it. But aside from that, adding "illicit" to the sentence just made it sound more interesting.

Because of criminal and other misuse, Pokémon GO announced they are deleting (banning) offending users.

I think this kind of augmented game is cool, it has people out walking around exploring places they normally wouldn't go. Everyone of all ages around here is playing it, the parks are full of people till they close. Droves of people out taking walks playing it all around.

The fad will die... I think, because it appears you really can't "casually" play this game... I do, and I'm no where near what people around me are. You've got to put some serious time into this game or you fall behind fast and you can't catch up....and im talking REAL WORLD TIME, not late night kick back and play... you gota be OUT THERE.

Who has that kinda time? KIDS!

Its fun but I think its just going to end up being the elite groups of players and the casual people are just going to get tired of it and forget about it....because there really isn't anything for the casual player to do other then catch stuff.

But its got some seriously nerdy people out getting some fresh air and sunshine.
