A spammer has been sentenced to two and a half years in jail, and fined $310,000 for sending out 27 million spam messages in a scheme which tricked facebook users, and involved an affiliate scheme.

Wallace illegally obtained, stored, and exploited Facebook user account information and earned money by redirecting users to other websites. Specifically, Wallace admitted he opened a fictitious Facebook account in the name of “David Frederix” to test his spam messages and created an automated process to sign into a Facebook user’s account, retrieve a list of all of the user’s friends, and then send a message to each of the user’s friends’ Facebook accounts.

Sanford Wallace is still around? I thought he was fined/jailed long ago. Maybe it was just wishful thinking...

So a fine of just over $.01/message? Yeah, that's a real deterrent to spammers. At least the jail time has some bite (assuming it's not some country club jail and he doesn't get out in 3 months for good behavior).

Sanford Wallace is still around?

Took the words right out of my mouth, only I've never seen it spelled anything but "Spamford".

Every couple of years I look up good ol' cyberpromo dot com -- remember them? I keep waiting for the day someone scoops up the name and repurposes it as the world's spam-fighting clearinghouse.
