Obama calls out encryption in terror strategy speech
President wants 'high-tech leaders to make it harder for terrorists to use technology to escape from justice'

United States President Barack Obama has given just his third Address to the Nation from behind his desk at the Oval Office, to deliver a speech in which he all-but-called-on the technology industry to allow access to encrypted communications.

See my comments on the proposed French law.

This will just prevent people using default clients from widely used services from encrypting: people who want to make an effort can still encrypt. It is about mass surveillance and has nothing to do with terrorism.

Sigh. Criminals will always find a way to get things, no matter how difficult you make it for them- it doesn't matter if it's guns, drugs, or encryption software. All most types of related legislation do is inconvenience law-abiding citizens. Oh, and allow politicians to pat themselves on the back, pretending that they're making a difference.

It is one or both of: ignorance of technical reality, terrorism theatre.
It changes nothing, was and is a total waste of breath beyond ticking some imaginary political necessity box.
So sad.
