A judge has ruled that Amazon has to face a lawsuit over trademark search where it appears to show results for competitors when searching for a specific brand.

We've had this kind of thing before, and it's always borderline, especially when a trademark is involved. At least the court thinks the lawsuit should be heard, even if the result is a foregone conclusion.

"We think a jury could find that Amazon has created a likelihood of confusion," the court wrote. Amazon Faces Lawsuit Over Trademark Search [reuters.com]

It's a weird line to be walking, philosophically, that all search is going through now. We're gonna read your mind, and not let you control what you see with your potential full boolean power, so that we have some semblance of predictability and order in this cowardly new world, but we're not gonna be responsible for what happens when we read it wrong, selfishly, or respond with a lack of appropriate subtlety, 'cause, well, we're not human, y'know.

The idea behind these cases is that if AI is going to be intelligent, it had better be REALLY intelligent. Otherwise, it's too big for its britches.
