It's taking a long time for people to wake up to the fact that every piece of information they put online becomes out of their control, imho.

Should they have greater control over their personal data? Absolutely, yes.
But, really, there's an easier solution: don't put it online if you want to keep it private.
Of course, there's other data collected by agencies and services that people use: local government, taxes, etc. Is that really safe? According to the survey, people are sceptical about the safety of privacy. They are right to be because complacency is as much of a danger.

Survey results from early 2015 show:

93% of adults say that being in control of who can get information about them is important; 74% feel this is “very important,” while 19% say it is “somewhat important.”
90% say that controlling what information is collected about them is important—65% think it is “very important” and 25% say it is “somewhat important.”

At the same time, Americans also value having the ability to share confidential matters with another trusted person. Nine-in-ten (93%) adults say this ability is important to them, with 72% saying it is “very important” and 21% saying it is “somewhat important.”
At the same time, a much larger group had engaged in some everyday obfuscation tactics and privacy-enhancing measures.

Now if you didn't ask them how many would consider it a complete waste of time. That would be close to 99% IMHO.
