Anyway, I posted videos on YouTube. First, because of the large crowd, I set up where I was able to set up - very close to the band. So you will notice some clipping in the sound. Couldn't be helped - I had the record level at -30db. You'll also notice the pool players since I was next to the pool table. Oh well.

Second, there was a problem with the PA that the sound guy worked on all night. Vocal levels improved but were never great. Matt couldn't tell how bad the PA was because his monitor was blasting away in front of him.

Third the band took a request for a song they had never played together, Free Bird. It was quite rough in a few places and normally I would not have put it on YouTube, but I uploaded it anyway because of Matt's killer - and I mean he shredded - lead guitar.

Tyler was his usual great self on keyboards, and Dusty (drummer) outdid himself on their cover of Hendrix's "Fire". The Funk Medley had the house rockin'. Here's a link to the playlist:

Well, woo hoo lawman junior ;)

I think you mentioned once that son is a year older or younger than the other guys in the band. What happens when they find themselves on opposite sides of the high-school fence?

Matt is first year of college. Others are seniors in high school. So far no problem.

And I've changed my mind; I now put the funk medley at number 1.

Here, play this in the background while you're coding. I guarantee it'll be the funkiest code you've ever written. And somebody tell webwork to let me know if there's enough space between notes:

It must be enormously gratifying to know that no child of yours will ever figure in one of those stories ending in "Hey, wow, look, Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings" ;) (Yup, I watched the whole set. I assume that was you hollering "Oi! Down in front! That's my son, you philistines!")

Had they played for this audience before? They all seemed to like each other. I thought it was especially adorable the way they fell apart on the lyrics of "Free Bird" and nobody minded a bit.

Ah well. Back to quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever heard in my life [youtube.com], always excepting the Limerick Song, which doesn't count.

Matt is a huge Beatles fan. He went to a McCartney concert in Jacksonville Friday night. He was in heaven.

This was the first time they played this venue. Management was surprised at how large the crowd was. They had calls during the week asking who the band was. Management wants them back and said they are willing to pay more so I guess Blindfish made them money.

The band fell apart on more than the lyrics of Free Bird. But the crowd ate it up anyway.

I like Can Can but don't think I can take 10 hours of it.

Proud papa you must be.

And grand fun watching kids have fun.

Musically, ... need another three years, though the raw stuff is there.

Perhaps a quality of the recording/video, but too much guitar, not enough bass... though the venue might be part of that (and equipment the band has).

Suggest guitar and organ on opposite sides of stage FACING each other (bass and drums center) as the bass player sometimes wasn't sure where they were with the back of Matt as his lead.

Get a PA that works. Vocals sub-optimal to band volume. Or, conversely, lower band volume so vocals can be heard, (again, this might be an aspect of the recording, not the performance, though I don't think so).

A little more time spent choosing/finding optimal keys for vocals, one or two were just at the edge of the performer's vocal range and it showed.

Again, grand fun and possibilities abound. Everything proud papa could desire.

As a musical act, fair. Okay for school and pubs. Maybe civic functions in the park. Are they ready for more? Depends on how hungry they are, how well they take commentary, and how hard they work.

I played in a band this "good" when I was 13. Some fifty years later I'm still playing, do studio and film work, toured USA, Canada, and Mexico, and taught music for 45 years. Just observations by one who has been there for a while and helped some great young talents get their start.

Lawman, every reason to be proud papa!

Every reason to encourage.

Now become the band manager and do the hard work necessary to take it to the next level ... and that ain't just Matt. Each of the others are necessary (band) and some encouragement and perhaps lessons to fine tune, is in order. If the BAND does not grow (ie. not all Matt), he will end up playing alone. Happens all too often when those not recognized (or growing musically) will just walk away.

Thanks for the listen!

I really did enjoy. All comments meant with best of heart and encouragement... after all, you put it out there and I am compelled to reply AS MY DAD was our manager for four years (my 13-16 3/4 years). Made all the difference. Made it all work.

Thanks for the memories (he's gone, but what he left remains).

Thanks for the advice tangor.

Definitely agree

Perhaps a quality of the recording/video, but too much guitar, not enough bass... though the venue might be part of that (and equipment the band has).

I've been suggesting that the bassist fatten that thing up. Don't know if he can't or won't.

Suggest guitar and organ on opposite sides of stage FACING each other (bass and drums center) as the bass player sometimes wasn't sure where they were with the back of Matt as his lead.

I'll pass that along, although this was a challenging stage to play on.

Get a PA that works. Vocals sub-optimal to band volume. Or, conversely, lower band volume so vocals can be heard, (again, this might be an aspect of the recording, not the performance, though I don't think so).

They used the house PA. Before the gig I told Matt they needed to play quieter in a situation like that. He agreed but didn't follow through. The house PA wasn't up to snuff anyway. Band has its own PA system but they decided they didn't want to lug it around that night.

A little more time spent choosing/finding optimal keys for vocals, one or two were just at the edge of the performer's vocal range and it showed.

Which singer? Matt or organ player or both?

I have a day job and don't have the time or energy to be the manager. Been trying to find one. Very difficult

Amen

Just for fun, Matt wanted the band to play Little Wing. I heard him in his room a few months ago plunking around on an acoustic guitar trying to learn it. He plugged the Strat into a Mesa Boogie amp that he just received that day as a graduation present and this is his first electric version. He recorded it on his iPad. So far the band hasn't taken up the challenge.

Both. Then again, there's that "youth" thing going on and they will try stuff they really shouldn't (sing). Each looks past puberty, so at this point it is learning LIMITATIONS because damn few of us have an octave and a half, much less two, two and a half, or three octave range!

Little Wing

Best Hendrix song!

I tried to learn it once, found it difficult and never really was able to nail it. That was a long time ago. Can't blame people in a band not wanting to play it in front of a crowd until they have a high degree of confidence.

RE: Little Wing

Skill, of course, needs be 100% to pick and grin (I learned Little Wing by ear an hour after I first heard the album on release...) but that turned out to be only 90% of the song... the rest is the electronics and stage craft. It was another three years before I owned the necessary equipment. As for stage craft, I have always been the shy one. (winkers) At the moment I am waxing nostalgic of that era (musically, the rest of it sucked!)

What is nice about proud papa sharing these new adventures is getting to see young folks making that discovery of self and performance, still fresh to the game... with fair chops which can, with time and practice, season and grow. In the meantime they are creating their own memories.

I only looked briefly at a couple of clips but I agree with Tangor 100% about the vocals being too far back in the mix.
