Why anybody would listen to her music is beyond me.

I have especially steamed after she butchered the song American Pie.

Don't get me wrong. She is a very intelligent lady. To be able to achieve that level of success, without any real talent, requires a PHD in media manipulation.

I hope the story's true.

It always makes me laugh when multi-millionaire popstars whine on about the amount of money they lose to piracy.

It was the same with the 'Home taping is killing music' campaign the record companies had in the '80s. Like I'm going to feel sorry for Cliff Richard earnestly telling me that hes losing lots of money, and new talent can't come through because the record companies can't afford to promote them they're losing so much money...

Record companies don't make music, they profit from selling it, unfortunately they seem to think that it can't exist without them. When they start to think that they can actually create the product too we get the likes of [insert most hated boy band here] and 'pop idols'.

[insert most hated boy band here]

Record companies are only trying to protect their own interests and the interests of the artists they represtent. If there weren't any record companies - there wouldn't be any music! I say; "three cheers to Madonna for standing up for the rights of artists everywhere"!

I disagree with this statement. Music existed long before record companies did. Before the 40' if you wanted to have music somewhere, you had to hire musicians to play live.

A lot more musicians could make a living then. That was before the record industry steamed rolled real music.

I noticed that madonnasucks.com is available for
$750 for anybody that hates here that much.

You think she could afford to buy her own suck's domain name.

>the interests of the artists they represent.
Obviously tongue in cheek since record companies deal with 'product' not artists.
They have made a noose for their own necks, IMHO.
I have been a musician (pro and semi pro) most of my life.
The whole CD (digital) thing was a con from the beginning, with a major company 'employing' bands and media to promote it. How can they charge so much for a media that is so much cheaper to produce than vinyl¿
I think you'll find that Brian Epstein brought about a change in the way the music business operated (I actually worked for NEMS in Hill St in the hey days). Although he re-invested in (and for) his artists.
Agreeing with macguru, previously publishers earned from sheet music (still have some stashed away) now they can earn from all kinds of sources.

I'm just seeing EMI on the TV news saying they'll put stuff online (havent searched for web news yet), IMHO these companies have to move with the times not fight them.
I recently heard a record producer moaning (not the first I might add) about anybody these days being able to record music on a computer and take money from record company mouths. Don't they realise that they, as much as anybody, have fed 'processed' music to the public for years, they don't see that 'music and musicianship' are not possible from computers, ya gotta use yer fingers...and yer soul!
I better stop before I wear the groove out.

Hear hear, tbear.

The record industry has treated both consumers and artists with contempt for far too long. In reality their only concern is that someone is going to take their money away from them. I'm also a musician and I would prefer to slog my guts out selling CDs out of the back of my car than sign a contract which says BMG now 'own' my recordings to do with as they wish.

The internet is the perfect medium to distribute music and get heard without needing huge amounts of funding in order to make an impact. The 'theft'/downloading of mp3s on such a large scale is a backlash against an industry that everybody knows is exploitative and unimaginative.

He, he, he...

Musicians unite!
Live music lives!

I actually bought my first PC to help me manage my MIDI instruments and record stuff at home...... and that is the only thing I have never been able to do with it. Not that I want to any more.

I'm co-ordinating a recording at the moment (start sessions end of summer) and trying to recommend an analogue desk instead of a computer screen/keyboard (studio uses ProTools). The older musician producer is for it, the only against is the studio owner. I mean to say, where would I put my drink and ashtray if they have no desk in the control room¿ LOL
