I read a posting by Brett Tabke in webmasterworld regarding the usage of obscure words like umbrage and their possible useful (indirect traffic) nature. During the news this week some on said "I took umbrage at his remark" and for some strange reason ( probably hanging out here too much) I thought - hmmm [search engines...] that might be a great word to work into a webpage to see if I get any hits.

Anyhow - to cut to the chase does anyone have any thoughts on using words like umbrage in webpages to pick up traffic (even though the hits may be few and far between). My reasoning is that I use umbrage today and other tomorrow that could accumulate lots more hits as time goes by.

Please don't take umbrage ;-)) if this is not the correct place to investigate obscure theories.

My thanks to Brett Tabke and others here at webmasterworld for inspiring me to want to delve deeper into the SE world and helping me make obscure associations bewtween words like umbrage and google!

Kevinpate,

Now that google has digested this posting you will find that a search for "umbrage" will return this posting on
page 1, listing 11.

Okay so there were only 32,800 listings but to get the number 11 slot is quite a discovery for me.

The .com and .org domains are taken, but umbrage.net is still available if you really want to take a run at the umbrage market... :)

Your servers are in no danger of being overloaded with new traffic. WordTracker reports 4 searches for "umbrage" and 2 for "umbrage editions" in the last 60 days of their stats.

It might be worth experimenting with specialized vocabulary that's relevant to your site's topic, rather than just generally uncommon words, because then whatever visitors you'd draw with unusual words might be decently targeted.

Okay, okay,

It was just a little experiment to see if I could use what I had leared. Two months ago the only way I could have got on page one was a google adword! But now I have other options...

hmmm, oddly enough, I have no sense of umbrage at knowing that after another day, this post inches up to page 1, #10 in this little experiment. Soooooo, how's that adwords campaign lookin'? 8^)
