I think that was a bad decision. The most telling bit of that article was;

Jobs still must convince fans to pay for music they have grown accustomed to getting for free

Good luck. To top if off, they plan on making the service available to Mac users first, so they're marketing to 3% of web users. Fail first on a small scale rather than fail loud and large all at once? ;)

Seriously, the kids interested in downloading music aren't interested in anything the music industry execs have to say. Why surf to a site and sign up then pay a fee when they can fire up Kazaa Lite and download anything they want.

The other issue is selection. I don't care how charming Jobs is, he didn't get all those labels to provide millions of songs. Kazaa on the other hand...

I can understand secrecy on Apple's part, can't understand it here. They want to sell more Ipods?

Recording? I live in Nashville, all the recording studios already have Macs in them. ;) If I'm still on the wrong track, I surrender.

Indeed, Macs are widely used in the production phase. But we are talking about music distribution.

Nowadays, talking about Apple does not necessarely mean we are talking about Macs.
Latest rumors would be that some competitor could be interested in buying such a service before it hits the shelves.
