About once a month I get a call with someone trying to pull the "I'm from Microsoft and we detected your computer has a virus" scam. I needed to take a break for a few minutes, so I decided to waste some of his time instead of just hanging up and letting him move on to his next mark.

After letting him drone on for a couple of minutes I broke into his script reading ans asked exactly how he knew my computer had a virus. He said it's sending out messages every time I turn on my computer. I told him I just got back from a 2-week vacation (I wish!) and hadn't turned my computer on during that time. He then proceded with his script and asked me to turn on my computer.

I then told him he was a lying piece of **** and was well aware of the scam he was trying to pull. It was really hard to understand his think accent, but I thought he said something about hoping to get together for a beer once the virus was eradicated.

Okay, time to hang up and get back to work.

Next time, I think I'm going to tell the scammer I converted to Ubuntu 2 years ago and don't use Microsoft products because of all the telephone scammers and see how that goes. :)

These guys rely on getting through to the average person with little or no knowledge. It's the same as e-mail spam. You and I get it, but they don't care, because some sucker out there will respond.

I kept one on the phone for ten minutes the other day. I told her my computer was off. She told me she would wait until I turned it on. I told her I was really comfortable lying on the couch. She continued to try to get me off the couch to go turn on my computer. Finally she handed me off to a supervisor and it began again. He finally told me he'd call back and hung up on me.

Another thing I may try:
"Hang on while I boot my computer. (long wait) Okay, it's booted. Oh, just a sec- I just got an important e-mail from a freind. (short wait) He's telling me to beware of these scammers who call claiming to be from Microsoft and saying your computer has a virus. Hey- have you guys heard anything about this?"

I haven't had one of these calls for quite a while here in the UK. My trick is to shout
"Hey Bill this looks like a voice over IP call, can you run a trace route on this call"

They always hang up !
