Wireless Network Problem

WinXP to Win98

I have a WinXP to Win98 (laptop) wireless network. The 98 machine can see the files on the XP machine without any issues. The XP machine knows the names of the shared 98 folders, but will not give me access. I can ping both machines from each other and both have access to the net. XP sees the 98 machine name, but tells me "Access Denied" path can not be found and that I may not have permission.

Any thoughts on what could be wrong?

If you are in a workgroup configuration do you have a common account on each machine?

Been a while since I've configured a network using < w2k, but I seem to remember having similar problems which related to security/authentication - back the it would give me accessed denied in relation to IPC$ which was the core of the share system.

The answer was to add the login from the 9X box onto the w2k box so that both machines understood who I was and could authenticate me.

Delete the network path on your XP machine.

Go to "My Network Place" to locate the WIN98 share again.

Another possibility is that your workgroup is set to MSHOME. Set it to the same workgroup as WIN98 machine.

XP change the workgroup on some of my machines to MSHOME for some strange reason.
