The City of London Corporation has asked a company to stop using recycling bins to track the smartphones of passers-by.

Renew London had fitted devices into 12 recycling "pods", which feature LCD advertising screens, to collect footfall data by logging nearby phones.

Labour suggested that they will attempt to do this with ID cards, change of govt so the idea was dropped

what in the UK isn't tracked? turn your phone off.. but what about CCTV? ready to hit the streets? get your paper bag ready.. but then you'll get stopped.

Yeah, even the watchdog's thought it's getting out of control and have just brought in new laws for control and standards of publicly-operated CCTV.
