i have 5 static ip's and a gateway address.
i can only use the gateway, the other 5 ip's
don't even respond to a ping.
can anyone tell me how to use them for a web server?

i am using the Alcatel Speed Touch Usb with SmoothWall
gpl Mallard and Apache 2 on my server.
i also have a 4 port adsl modem router put i can't
get that to work with the other ip,s either.

If you are assigned five IPs from your ISP, you should be using a switch or hub as a router is not necessary. Assign each computer one of the static IPs you've been alotted.

The IP addresses won't respond to a ping until you give them to a machine.

At the moment, your setup probably looks like this:

*internet*----modem--smoothwall----*network*

The Smoothwall box has two IP addresses - one of the addresses allocated to you from your DSL provider, and a local address on the local network card. The Smoothwall is the only machine actually visible from the internet.

If you only plan on having one webserver, you don't need to use the other IPs. Just forward port 80 on the Smoothwall to the appropriate local address, and point www.your-domain.tld to your IP.

If you have multiple webservers, and still want to protect them behind the Smoothwall, you need the Corporate Server version with Smoothhost. You can then allocate all your IP addresses to the internet interface of the Smoothwall, and forward them to the appropriate local machine.
