Wireless Networking My NTL Box

Can anyone see why I'm not connecting?

Hi Guys and Gals,

I've got a problem.

I have a NTL set top box to which I always used to have a patch lead connecting the box to the Network Card of my laptop. I did not use the USB port as NTL suggested.

I have recently bought a Wireless Access Point and a PCMCIA network card. The Wireless Access Point has a USB and a patch point (RJ45).

My hope was to patch the Wireless Access Point direct to the NTL set top box and use the PCMCIA network card to pick up broadband anywhere in my house. I know that the PCMCIA network card is seeing the Wireless Access Point as I am getting a full signal strength. However, I am not receiving any data. Im trying to ping but I'm not connecting. My TCP/IP settings are all set to be picked up from the server just like my onboard network card.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Chris

NTL have washed their hands with me. <sarcasm> Don't you just love their customer service </sarcasm>. NTHellWorld are trying to help, with little sucess yet and Netgear have not responded.

I can't believe noone has tried this yet.

have you tried to resetting or reconfiguring your Wireless Access Point?

<added>
I know this sounds stupid, but also check your cables are in the right sockets. I spent an hour trying to figure out why I couldn't get mine to work...dooooh!

Jimbo,

Can you please elaborate. The way I have set it up is so that the only cable is that from the set top box to the wireless access point (which is a patch cable).

As far as configuration goes, I'm getting 100% stength which mean they can see each other. It's almost as if the box and the WAP can't see each other or the WAP isn't broadcasting the data it's getting.

Thanks for your help
Chris

from what you are saying they are not "talking".

In the manual that came with my router I was given an IP Address. Typing in the ip address in a browser brings up your routers preferences/settings/password etc. Once set mine worked a treat.

Not to get you confused - I have a normal router not WAP.
Just thinking there would be a few differences but not many in the control panel/preferences.

Hi Chris,

I've got an NTL cable modem and wireless network set up here at work.

I've used the RJ45 to connect the modem and Wireless Access Point.

It works apart from the signal failing every so often, but I that doesn't have anything to do with the NTL box.

Have you tried this with the RJ45 connection?

I know someone who had issues setting up their wireless with NTL. Can't say I know how it was fixed, though. I'll ask when I see him. I don't think his went through the set-top box, though :\

Try resetting the set tup box.

I have a seperate cable modem from NTL, but it requires a power cycle before it will recognise a different MAC address.

1) turn off set top box and wireless access point
2) turn on set top box
3) turn on wireless access point
4) check WAP has picked up an IP address from NTl
5) surf to your hearts content

I have a wireless network set up at my house.

My roomie has a laptop and a pcmiaa wireless nic

I have a USB wireless.

We supposedly have DHCP set up on the wireless base/router, however the only way I am able to get the cards to work is to assign them their own IP addresses. 198.168.0.121 and 198.168.0.12 I think we use.

So perhaps getting rid of the dynamic IP assignment on your Wireless Access Point.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses. Just to clarify I don't have a router I have a Wireless Access Point (WAP).

The guys over at NTHellWorld [nthellworld.com] (Gasp! Another Forum) seem to think it's not possible without a PC intevening or a wireless router.

I know what your talking about but it's a WAP and not a route :(

I don't have a cable modem. I use the NTL set top box.

4) check WAP has picked up an IP address from NT:

I'll try reseting the set top box. That never crossed my mind. How exacty would I check that the WAP has picked up the IP Address?

I'll give that a go.

Thanks to you all. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I didn't realise you just had a plain access point. I don't think it will work.

NTL will only allocate you a single IP address. That will be taken by the WAP, and your PC won't be able to get one.

Exchange it for a wireless router. They're not much more money, and will allow you to do what you want and more.

Alternatively, if you have an old spare PC and are reasonably comfortable with networking, you could install something like Smoothwall (http://www.smoothwall.org).
