I have an existing hard drive that is half full which I would like to partition into 2 partitiions?

Is it possible? Is it wise?

I don't think there's any way to partition a drive without reformatting it... But if you have a backup device to move all your data to while you format & partition the drive, it's quite easy.

Hi Fashezee,

It is possible, and it's only as wise as you make it ;)

The easiest way is to use partioning software like Partition Magic - it lets you create partitions without formatting the drive. And before you do anything, back up all the data you can't afford to lose. I can't stress that enough :)

Good luck,

Don't do it, don't even think about doing it. Buy a new drive and add that in as well. It costs less than the risk of losing data is worth.

Ooh. Cool. I wish I'd known that a couple months ago. hehehe. Suffice to say I certainly don't have any software that will do it without a reformat.

But, as to the wise part... why do you want to partition the drive in the first place?

For backup/network access purposes.

It makes it easier to handle.

Yep, partitioning and unpartitioning is simple with Partition Magic.
