But (MS VP of Windows) Allchin bristled at the comparison. "Google's a very nice system, but compared to my vision, it's pathetic," he said.
To which NTK countered "(he had) one of those 'if you could index the URLs I've seen with my eyes' moments" - ahhaha and then they used [news.google.com ] to link to the article.. classic stuff.
He then went on to say:
"Whether it's Google or any of the other search engines, the amount of random stuff you get back is pretty overwhelming," he said. "But if you knew a little bit about me — for example, I love music — so when I'm searching for 'strings,' you know they should know this guy's probably thinking about guitars."
Obviously he's spent too much time searching through MSN's search and not enough time tinkering in Google-- but he brings up an interesting point-- using user profile/marketing information to give more relevant search results.. I'm sure Google has toyed with that idea before-- ie each persons search has different results-- but I think thats wussing out, the best technology wouldn't need to customize for each person, it would just know what the person meant in the first place, even if the search engine is only meeting that person for the first time.
Just thought I'd share :).
