Been trying to get this on the Google forum but nowhere appropiate. Article on business in national paper featuring AOL ( as it was ) and BP.

When powerful leaders are plagued with over-confidence, the consequences for performance can be detrimental

i.e they bet the farm on a hunch as they were right last time.

Fred "The Hammer" Williamson brought his football swagger to his brief stint on Monday Night Football. Once, when the camera cut to the broadcast booth, there was The Hammer with a big cigar. Howard Cosell said, "There you are" to which The Hammer replied, "everybody's always somewhere Howard."

Not so famous. Don't know why it stuck with me.

I liked one from John Lennon's song, Beautiful Boy, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

My favourite quote is from a friend of mine his name is Robert Loving and he is only famous in a very small part of Dorset. The Quote is "You can't Educate Pork"
Over the years I have found it to be a useful and versatile phrase as it can be used to console someone who has lost an argument or as a fine insult to someone who is stuck in their belief and will not listen to an argument.

Most of us only remember his dethroning moment, "Lookit that little monkey run!"

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but the moments that take our breath away."

You must be talking about Cosell and not Williamson. He made several "little monkey" comments over the course of his life. None dethroned him.

The goal of education is to teach students to hate subjects. The one the student learns to hate last becomes the student's career.

"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

(quote is generally attributed to Abraham Lincoln)

By the usual yawn-provoking coincidence, I recently came across an equivalent passage in Chaucer's translation of Boethius's De Consolatione Philosophiae while looking for some light reading.* Nobody panic: the bit that caught my eye was in the editor's synopsis.

After counterfeiting patience for a while, the sophist said to the other, ‘You must surely confess that I am a philosopher.’
‘I might have believed it,’ said the other, ‘had you held your tongue.’

The wording may not be as snappy, but the sentiment is definitely there :)

* JOKE. Look for the e-book, coming soon to a scraper near you. For a given definition of "soon", anyway.

If we are sufficiently enlightened as to be discussing discussing mens underwear in foo then "Ma gavte la nata" has to be a favourite by association :)

From one of my favourite books by one of my favourite authors ..

Re:

...I know this is a stretch on the topic, but that reminds me of the sign in front of a Chinese restaurant in Portland, Maine:

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.
