I was just playing around and since my monitor swivels thought I'd try portrait mode for giggles.

WOW. Don't know why I didn't do this before.

Even makes reading WebmasterWorld a totally different adventure having a 24" on it's side shows a lot of text at once and about 20+ tweets in the old twitter stream.

I'm thinking I may have to leave it this way cause I'm liking it and it also makes room for the 3rd monitor to more easily site on my desktop.

Gotta go shop online for multiple monitor stands now, time to spend money...

Now thinking about the Ergotron DS100 triple monitor stand, anyone use it?

Looks like the way to go.

Yes, quite an experience. I had a dual monitor setup for years, but only half a year ago the idea occured to me that I could use one of my screens in portrait mode. I turned it and it has remained that way.

Only make sure if you buy a monitor stand that it supports the weight of your screens. Also not all monitor stands support swivel.

Don't know the brand, but one librarian's desk has a monitor holder with ... it's got to be at least six joints. You could use that thing lying on your back. Standing on your head. Kneeling on the other side of the counter.

no, never heard of it,

although i have 3 monitors, side by side (the two end ones angled in) and the right hand one i have rotated 'portrait' have done for years, it's awesome and ideal for reading forums, writing code etc.

One of my current monitor stand supports rotation, I tried it for a second once before, looked like a novelty then and I put it right back. This time something clicked, I shoved the other landscape monitor closer to the middle of the keyboard. Much easier to work with both screens and the amount of data right in front of my face is amazing. It's almost as if having dual monitors for the first time!

Now I think I'm ready to take the plunge with 3 as my desktop needs to look like something from NASA. Of course 5 or 6 would be perfect, esp. now with 24" monitor prices so CHEAP, but I don't think the wife would be pleased :)

... hehe, i've pondered 6 and would love that for the cool effect, i could actually have 2 layers of three, it could help with productivity.

once i had 4 all side by side, but there was virtually zero gain with the 4th, and it hurt my neck - basically i had my standard 3 monitor set up (keyboard infront of middle monitor) and added the 4th on the left. but i do see the extra layer as viable.

... especially as you mention how cheap monitors are ... my central one is a 26 inch at the moment, i only have 1 rotatable stand on the right, 24 inch and the left one is an old 19 inch 5x4 aspect

More than a week later and the big screen is still on it's side, loving it!

Heck, this multiple monitor thing is nothing new for me. I had multiple monitors back in the old CP/M days (MP/M actually) with as many as 4 monitors hanging off my machine as I was coding, compiling, testing, etc. across all those at the same time. The only difference then was each screen had it's own keyboard which had it's advantages.

Imagine my dismay when the PC took over with just one crappy little screen. For a while I tried to buck the trend with MP/M-86 which never caught on so I was yanked backwards, kicking and screaming, to MSDOS, blech.

It's nice to finally get back to where I started 30 years ago.

hehe, you're so old school incrediBill!

i got my first computer only in '99 and went dual just after that! so i'm a fair bit behind you.

rotated a monitor for the first time when i got my first viewsonic around 6 years ago, as it was the first monitor stand i'd had that could rotate 90 degrees, been loving it like that ever since.

Now I'm looking for a good 3 monitor stand that will do 3 24" monitors with one in portrait mode, 2 in landscape, and not cost a small mint.

The options are somewhat confusing and seems most only allow 3 horizontal across when you get into 24" sizes.

Any recommendations?

haha, that's quite some chair phranque!

... can't help with a multistand, my monitors are all on separate stands on a purpose built (by me) shelf which is 7 inches above my desk.
