Worked for a travel agents. Very large drop on expected bookings so it all came down to last hired first fired.

Now for yet another career.

mack sorry to hear that, although never having had a job, I dont actually know what it would feel like.

1 thing I do know is that member as knowledgeable as yourself should have NO problems in getting some work.

Head over to Commercial exchange and post up your details, listing what you can and cant do. There are many business out there who are never advertising for staff, but will NOT turn down an experienced person, especially 1 with so many posts at Webmasterworld :)

Who knows this could be a step in the right direction.

good luck.

Sorry to hear that Mack

There is a few of us here that suffered the same experience and used it as a springboard to go-it-alone.

Good luck, whatever you decide

4eyes is right mack,
As one door closes another door always opens. OK we all know that travel bookings are down at this moment in time both on and off the web but it could be the right time to go into a new venture. A few months down the line and you will be thinking " Why did I not do this earlier" I personally have never had a proper job for 22 years, yes 22 years I have been self employed and you can always find work if you look for it

Good Luck and don't let it get you down, your next job is just around the corner

I got sacked a couple years ago... On my birthday no less! And I've never looked back. Been independent ever since.

Sorry to hear about that Mack. I wish you the best of luck in finding a new position. In the meantine, Maccas has good advice about considering trying out affiliate marketing. It's a fairly low risk, low cost business that doesn't have to cost much to get into except your time, and it can have a very high payback.

i can't tell you how many times i have thought about the combined knowledge and skills of the people on this web site but have been afraid to mention something. Mack has now enabled me to cross that line. Why don't we do a better job on this board helping people with there careers (or am i missing something. I for one have more seo clients than i know what to deal with. I would love for example to be able to go to this site and say, hey Mack i can help, can you optimize this site for me this week, and take care of the directory listings, etc. etc. Anyone ever place an ad in the paper or on-line (Monster)for a search engine expert? It is laughable. WE ARE RIGHT HERE- on this board, and we CAN and SHOULD help eachother. The market is TOO big, and our benefit to clients is TOO great. Webmaster SEO job board. Just thinking....thanks.

Sorry to here Mack - time for a "better future"

Still can't help feeling that with the undisputed "combined knowledge and skills of the people" who use this forum - something great could be achieved - with a "united" project - helping provide a secure future.

What if? all these talented SEO / Webmasters "pooled" their efforts & resources

What could be achieved with such a "Powerful united effort"?

Mack, sorry to hear about the position. I, and just about every other employee at the company, had the same thing happen after 9/11 , airline industry, and that is what motivated me to go it alone.

Good luck!

But I think you may find you're already in the best position, once you have a second to step back from the experience

You know what? Everyone of you is right.

Time to move on.

chiyo. I liked that phrase you used...

"Companies come and go. Individuals carry on."

To right.

Already making a few plans for the future. As they say, time doesnt stop, and neither do I.

Yeh... sorry to hear too Mack.... but I'm happy that you've picked up the positive vibes. I just checked a few of your past posts and you know what you are about. In time, I suspect you'll find a new higher plateau to hang out on.

If you're still trying to pursue the web design route I'll keep an eye open for opportunities for you (I think you are UK based like me).

Really sorry to hear about your news Mack, but as you say, everyone in here is correct in what they say. I too have just cheked out a lot of your recent posts and it is clear you have a broad knowledge of all things 'computery'

I am confident you will either find it relatively easy to get another "proper job" or begin on your own advernture!

Good luck in whichever path you decide upon!

bummer Mac. i feel your pain. it will go.

i have just been made redundant (along with 110 others) from a large television/telcom/ISP company with a rather nice payout. problem is that whoever did the executions didn't actually know what it was that i do.

as a result they have had to come back and explain that it was all a great big mistake and that they actually do want me to stay after all. and that is even worse. you get axed (luckily for me with some cash) and you come to terms with it and accept it even though you are bummed. and then you are faced with the possibility of going back and suddenly you realise that it's impossible - you've already moved on. maybe if you put yourself in this position it would help? imagine if they tried to take you back...nah - just doesn't work. you have already moved forward even if it is a bit painful right now.

i have even been offered a contract by my company to come back for 6 months as a consultant at double my present rate. yes i was tempted and yes i ran around for 3 weeks gleefully anticipating huge amounts of cash plus a big payout. but i have chosen to say no and do something i am truly passionate about for no money at all and take my chances that things will work out. i am truly happy with this decision even though it means i have to give up beer.

good luck - hope you find something soon.

Best that ever happened to me was getting fired from my last "real" job.
I was working 45+ hours a week for $35,000 a year.
Now, 5 years later I am working 30 hours a week for 3x the money. Losing my "security blanket" finally gave me the guts to do something on my own.

---->resident career advisor right here! :)

Its a bummer Mack, but don't let it get you down. Ive been sacked from a few jobs and have always gone on to something better.

Had I stuck to the same job in the past 3 years, I doubt very much I would have been able to develop my web design skills at all.

Its the variety that gives you experience and new options. Usually stuff that you would have never have considered too.

If you need any help or advice with job hunting n stuff, feel free to sticky me! :)
