1 thing I do know is that member as knowledgeable as yourself should have NO problems in getting some work.
Head over to Commercial exchange and post up your details, listing what you can and cant do. There are many business out there who are never advertising for staff, but will NOT turn down an experienced person, especially 1 with so many posts at Webmasterworld :)
Who knows this could be a step in the right direction.

Still can't help feeling that with the undisputed "combined knowledge and skills of the people" who use this forum - something great could be achieved - with a "united" project - helping provide a secure future.
What if? all these talented SEO / Webmasters "pooled" their efforts & resources

If you're still trying to pursue the web design route I'll keep an eye open for opportunities for you (I think you are UK based like me).
I got sacked a few years ago and having a house, wife, dog, and a porsche to look after it was hard going for a bit but i got back, allowed me time to beef up my own online business and now in 3 weeks time I'm going back to the people who sacked me for nearly 5x the salary i was on before! they'll miss u!
I am confident you will either find it relatively easy to get another "proper job" or begin on your own advernture!

i have just been made redundant (along with 110 others) from a large television/telcom/ISP company with a rather nice payout. problem is that whoever did the executions didn't actually know what it was that i do.
as a result they have had to come back and explain that it was all a great big mistake and that they actually do want me to stay after all. and that is even worse. you get axed (luckily for me with some cash) and you come to terms with it and accept it even though you are bummed. and then you are faced with the possibility of going back and suddenly you realise that it's impossible - you've already moved on. maybe if you put yourself in this position it would help? imagine if they tried to take you back...nah - just doesn't work. you have already moved forward even if it is a bit painful right now.
i have even been offered a contract by my company to come back for 6 months as a consultant at double my present rate. yes i was tempted and yes i ran around for 3 weeks gleefully anticipating huge amounts of cash plus a big payout. but i have chosen to say no and do something i am truly passionate about for no money at all and take my chances that things will work out. i am truly happy with this decision even though it means i have to give up beer.

Its a bummer Mack, but don't let it get you down. Ive been sacked from a few jobs and have always gone on to something better.
Had I stuck to the same job in the past 3 years, I doubt very much I would have been able to develop my web design skills at all.
Its the variety that gives you experience and new options. Usually stuff that you would have never have considered too.
If you need any help or advice with job hunting n stuff, feel free to sticky me! :)
