I have a seed of an idea in my head and wonder if there's something already out there...

Thinking of some kind of "free" Netflix alternative in which people around the USA can swap DVD's by mail.

Not sure how it would work, but suppose you could have a ratings system so you know who's reliable and who's not.

Hmm...

I have not heard of that with movie DVD's.

However, Deadheads do something called a "Vine". They make a list of people interested in a particular recording. Somebody sends you a cd of music (or a tape recording in the olden days). You make a copy for yourself and then they send it to the next person on the list. This was one way they distributed concert recordings of the Grateful Dead.

They talk about the intricate details of a Vine here:

OMG, headbang. There's something like this out there for books, fairly popular, or was. I completely forget the name of it. I think they had something in planning for DVD's but it's been years since I've seen it.

Anyone?

They call it a Book Vine. Just googled it.

Go figure. I wonder if Deadheads invented the name or borrowed it.

Ah, I found it. Book mooch.

You put your books online. Someone wants your book, you mail it to them. This gives you points, you can then use to request a book from someone else.

Cool system.
