Back in the early 90's a friend of mine was starting a masters degrees at Trinty College Cambridge, I dropped by to see what he was planning.

For his Masters degree he was attempting to prove that it was possible to put TV pics through the internet.

I scratched my head and said, why are you wasting your time ? The internet is a kids toy.....

everytime I meet him I get a verbal kicking about that little gem.

I remember back about 20 odd years ago the company I worked for then was rolling out their new email system. I think it was Wordperfect and I just did not get it. I thought it was just another way to waste money. ;)

At the dawn of the internet, the owner of the company I worked for at the time asked me if we should register their company.com. I responded that I didn't see any commercial application to having two computers hooked together. He skipped it, a competitor later registered it, and away they went with the lawsuits.

And I still haven't found any commercial application, though not from lack of trying :).
