Advanced Micro Devices announced today that it has broken the world record for the fastest clock speed for a PC microprocessor.
The new 8-core AMD FX desktop processor can be overclocked (or run beyond the usual specifications) to as much as 8.429 gigahertz.
While that’s impressive, it isn’t really practical. Most of the AMD chips will run at much slower speeds, and the new world record simply means that, with expensive cooling power, AMD’s enthusiast fans have been able to coax one chip to run that fast.

I built an i7-920 (clocked at 2.66 GHz off the shelf) watercooled machine a couple of years ago.
I managed to push the machine past 5 GHz, stable. I had the CPU on a separate refrigerated loop from the the video and mb chipset.
This is with relatively cheap cooling components - we're talking $50 or so - and it's easy with a little bit of research.
The overclockability of the recent Intel and AMD chips is quite amazing!

yep with proper cooling you can just keep on pushing them.
