[theglobeandmail.com...]

from his letter of resignation

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

.....

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
More related to this story

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

Good bye Steve

I didn't always agree with you but you did a lot of things that I respect and you shaped our industry for the better. I hope this move will bring you a longer happier life

Jobs remains Chairman of the Board, thus the boot to the neck is still there... :)

Though meant as a joke, Jobs will still have influence at Apple for some time to come. And I do hope that his (medical?) reasons for stepping down are small and manageable!

Bad news for Apple.

Bill Gates still almost certainly calls the shots at the end of the day - but he is in good health.

On the other hand, I do not think that MS has been as well run by Ballmer (and if he had managed to buy Yahoo it would have been a disaster for MS - although wonderful for Yahoo shareholders).

Jobs turned Apple around, and his way of doing things sells. I do not like it - Apple products are far too locked down, but I am not the target market.

Just to make things worse, the successor is going to be constantly compared to Jobs.

Retire is relative. I''m sure he will keep a close eye on things and still have plenty of influence no matter what.

I'm not an apple user myself either, but what they do is make advanced technology "intuitive," and they do that well.

I actually feel sorry for the guy - he is ill and I hate say it .. he made Apple a success.
