The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (Seti) Institute has announced that due to funding cuts, the Allen Telescope Array (ATA) in California has been mothballed.

The telescopes, at the Hat Creek Radio Observatory north of San Francisco, California, have a number of science goals, including searching for radio signals from intelligent life in the Universe.

I don't know what any of the other goals of this array might have been, but the search for signals from home will be missed.

Although the ATA isnít the only radio telescope facility which is capable of searching for alien life, itís the only one dedicated almost wholly to the task.

This is probably one of those things our tax dollars fund that isn't as stupid as it sounds. Probably. But maybe not.

The news report on the radio yesterday said something like, "Budget cuts have force the shutdown of SETI, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, in Northern California."

As the newscaster said it quickly (as in no pause at the commas), I wondered why they were wasting tax dollars searching for extra-terrestrial aliens in Northern California- most likely the aliens are going to be in outer space, not Northern California.

Granted, there are aliens and other weird things in Northern California, but I'm not sure that they're ETs.

A clever ruse designed to lull the aliens into revealing themselves, no doubt.

Funding cuts nothing, the thing was bound to pick up on a U.S. super secret deep space station eventually. You KNOW it's up there.
