Here's an interesting TED talk by Chade Meng Tan, Google's "Jolly Good Fellow" Engineer. Not about search, but there's a few insights to be had. Enjoy!

Obviously it's all PR, in the beginning he talks about how Google implements ideas from the 'bottom up' when they reach a critical mass of interest.

Does anyone think that this how changes to the search engine itself are born? It sure would explain the feature-bloat and never-ending projects on Google Labs.

What about algorithmic changes? Has anyone here been following all of the individual engineers' blogs, interests and side-projects in an attempt to figure out what the heck they are thinking with these updates? Any thoughts? Would it be a fool's errand?

If you ask me, Google was finished about five years ago. Finished in the meaning of "complete". Since then it went steadily downhill. The last years has been engineers trying to justify their existence. That's like legislation. Some day pretty much is regulated but they can't stop they keep on regulating and regulating... so they go and on passing new legislation nobody needs.

Honestly: Who needs Google Instant, preview, the sidebar, pictures and videos in SERPs, and all the other crap they have added in the past years?
