Who inspires you? An actual person, not a concept.

How did they do it? This a "feel good" thread.

My grandpa was my main source of inspiration. Not only when I was young but also in my later life after he'd already gone.

Grandpa farmed, but he also worked for the Post Office. He hired out much of his farming. He also leased land for cattle. He owned 600 acres in 3 pastures. 100 acres, 200 acres and the big one was 300 acres.

He was a gentle man. He taught me to be gentle, although I haven't always been. He was forgiving.

Grandpa didn't complain either. I heard him curse many times, but he didn't complain. If something broke, he fixed it. He might cuss while he was doing it but he got it done. He taught me a great deal.

Grandpa was competent and that in itself instilled a level of self-confidence in me that is priceless.

It's Friday. Somebody run with this.....

I am a grandpa with three grandsons and as someone who never knew any grandparents I am now more interested in being inspiring then being inspired. :)

What time is where you are Wyweb?

I just woke up.

Well, actually I've been up for a while. It takes me a while to wake up though.

I'm getting old.

Grandpa put together projects for us. Myself and my two brothers.

They were usually simple but they were designed to teach us to use tools.

I was blue collar until I wrecked that motorcycle. Now I sit behind a desk.

I'd just as soon put those tool bags back on though. If I could, I would.

Mr. Spock.

He taught me all you humans are irrational and can easily be dealt with using logic.

I became a programmer.

Mr. Spock.

Yeah and he also had that Vulcan mind link going on too.

And the Vulcan nerve pinch. He could drop a human like a rock.

If we're going to allow Mr. Spock, I'm going to say Jonathan Livingston Seagull [en.wikipedia.org]Always be true to yourself and never let the nay-sayers prevent you from accomplishing your dreams and goals.

And although I never watched the series (I think I saw one show once), MacGyver, with a touch of Captain Kirk. There is ALWAYS a solution to any problem- often you just have to think so far outside the box that you can't even see the box any more.

Talk about a very timely post! In the middle of writing my response, the tape holding up the high-tech sun shade (2 big pieces of cardboard) we have in the office window finally gave up the ghost. I talked to the resident handyman about coming up with a fix. That fix didn't even last long enough for him to climb down the ladder. In a flash of insight, I went to the office supply cabinet, grabbed some binder clips, and fastened them to the supports for the ceiling tiles, creating a protrusion to keep the cardboard against the window.

Oh absolutely. I read it twice. Beautiful read.

You just took me back in time and quite often I like that.

MacGyver

MacGyver could get out of a locked room with a bic pen. Then he'd throw together a rocket launcher with some old PVC pipe and a can of gas.

I watched a lot of them but there was a lot of violence in them too. I'm trying to find peace. I don't want violence in my life and I don't want it in yours either.

Hence, love, deserved respect, and forgiveness all seem to be equally important to the freedom from the pressure to obey the rules just because they are commonly accepted.

From your wikipedia cite. That's sort of where I was wanting to go with this.

Hillary Clinton. I mean, even if you hate her guts, geez, she just keeps on keeping on with her vision, trying to do what she sees needing to be done, despite EVERYONE ON THE PLANET EARTH (including me), at one time or another, trying to get in her way. Amazing. She has out MacGyvered MacGyver.

I have no problem with that woman at all. I've had problems with her husband though.

A successful attorney for years. Fast burner. Sharp on her feet. If I got in trouble I would love to have her in my corner.

First lady at one point. Extremely intelligent.

If she runs again I'll vote for her. We need to shake things up in this country. I thought Obama was going to do that but it's fallen flat so far.

From your cite:

in 2010 she was named the most admired woman by Americans for the ninth straight time and the fifteenth overall

She's doing something right.

Steve Irwin, fearless, lived life with a passion, died doing what he loved.

Steve Irwin

The gator guy. I used to watch his show on a regular basis.

What I liked about him was his enthusiasm. It was quite obvious he was enjoying himself.

And I don't think I ever saw him without a smile on his face. Even when he was jumping on the back of a 12 foot alligator.

His wife got a little freaked out sometimes though.

To manage my business: Bill Gates.
To wake up every day and make what a man must do: my father (*).

(*) My father passed away four years ago; there was no less than 2.000 people in his funeral. He worked all of his life for the community in a honest way from a local bank branch. Serious. rigourous and punctual. Simply admirable.

Steve Fossett was someone else I admired as well.

[en.wikipedia.org ]

You may recall the search for his plane in 2007.

Maj. Ryan later noted that the search was the largest, most complex peacetime search for an individual in U.S. history.

The guy took risks. Actually what he did was pushed limits.

He was an innovator. He started things. He'd get something going and take it as far as he possibly could.

That works for me.

Andrea True

Well, I suppose. I had to look her up.

[en.wikipedia.org ]

former adult film star

The pictures I've seen of her this morning are blistering hot.

I don't know how she could inspire me though. She's just another hot chick trying to make a living. There are quite a few of those.

I'd certainly invite her in my house for a night. If she woke up the next morning and did my dishes and a couple loads of laundry I might be slightly inspired.

Richard Burton.

Not the hanmmy old Welsh actor, but the great explorer 1821 - 1890. My favourite quote "The dearest ambition of a slave is not liberty but to have a slave of his own".
