The old guard is fading. More and more we're stuck with "news reporters" who stick two operatives on a split screen and let each speed through talking points. Meanwhile the reporter seems unwilling or incapable of interrupting or otherwise taking charge as the operatives over-talk each other.

I miss news people who came up through the ranks, developed contacts, could cut through the BS, put together a coherent story, and speak with authority. So sad.

It is sad. Broder will be especially missed during the presidential elections. Broder's trick was to listen to real people's reaction to what was being said in the supermarket, at the ballgame, in the airport and connect the dots.

Everyone complains about the 24-hour news cycle and it is a problem, but David Broder's analysis remained high quality.
