SEO Spam Emails

This post is just to satisfy my own curiosity. I work for someone that is less than computer savvy. I do web design, seo/sem optimization and what I would describe as "light IT support".

Last week, he called me into his office because he received a spam email promising the SEO moon and stars (typical spam) and wanted me to contact them just to find out "what they know", in particular compared what I *don't* know.

My question:

What are your thoughts on responding to SEO spam ever being a good or bad thing?

Any thoughts are appreciated. I wish this wasn't bugging me as much as it is, but there ya go.

Someone that has to resort to spamming is obviously short of work.

And that would be because...

^^^ There's your answer and the one you should offer your client.

I have had clients asking the same thing. Some people are naturally naive about these things.

I sometimes do respond to spam. I get these offers through a couple of websites I have that are not web design related. They contact me through the website email addresses assuming that their offers will land on the desk of someone daft enough to swallow their cr@p.

You can have some fun responding to them by asking some telling questions about how they are going to put you at number one in Google for mesothelioma or whatever.

look for a new job - i see problems ahead with this fool of a boss.

there are so many reasons not to respond to spam emails that it is laughable.

topr8 - Don't think I haven't thought of it, but I have been with this company since I was 20 and we are talking over 25 years now.

Crap, I'm old.

I am going to use the "short of work because..." answer if this ever comes up again.

Didn't we work out the average age around here to be in the late 50s going on 60 a couple of years ago? :-)

Well, that makes me above average. I am quite pleased with that! :)

I've been told that "you're only as old as the girl that you feel" - it certainly shaves a few years of my age :)
