OK, so it's time to be prepared for more terrorist attacks in the US. How are people gettng prepared?

I've got lots of fresh ammo. Got a central family meeting place deep in the boondocks. Got a few cans of nutrituos canned Spam and some canned veggies, a can opener, a jug of water, kerosene for the backup heater, some antibiotics and a full tank of gas. Oh, and some dust masks.

I really should get a small battery powered radio. Yep, thats next on my list.

Any other suggestions?

Could be worse RC, at least it isn't known as "siding". ;-)

What accent RC? Lost mine a long time ago when I was in the Army. People say I sound like I'm from Iower, Iderho and sometimes, get this, Alabamer.

Oilman has to go to Pubcon to translate for many of the attendees.

Hehe! I'm still chuckling over my wife trying to phone NFFC's wife when we arrived in Nottingham. Oilman had to grab the phone and handle the greetings and such.

-One for each member of the family...
[ilcdover.com...]

-Water is essential. Each person will need 2 gallons of water minimal per day (1 gallon for drinking and 1 gallon for sanitation). For family of 4, you'd want to stock enough water for at least 40 days (that's 320 gallons of water...64 5 Gallon containers).

-Water proof matches and lighters (avoid zippo types that require fluid refills)

-Small butane torch (could function as drill in many cases).

-Flashlights (with back-up batteries)...and hand-crank flashlights for last result

-Battery powered radio and flare signals

-First aid kits (you could buy a good kit at a drug store...price range differs depends on the contained items)

-Camping/survival knife (desired feature include a compass and a fishin kit)...hand saw and hand ax

-Fishing rod and extra hooks and strings

-A hunting rifle with a scope (to hunt bigger games)...hunting bow and arrows (as the arrows are re-usable, they are better bullets)

-50 pounds of rice

-cooking utensils (pot and pan)

-Necessary medicines for those with medical conditions (stocking these will be difficult)

-Three pairs of socks for everyone (one thick winter, one medium and one short summer...all cottons)...two pair of jeans for everyone...choice of a shirt for everyone (long sleeve and a short sleeve)...a sweatshirt for everyone...thin leather jackets for everyone...thick winter coats for everyone...thermies:)...gloves (leather and working gloves..tougher the better)...a pair of tough work boots for everyone..a pair of military boots for everyone (more eyes the better...meaning higher the better)...thick winter hats/face mask

-Avoid stocking any canned food with high salt content...as they will make you thirsty...good candidates for canned food are...low salt tuna in the can...low salt/salt free canned vegies....stock dehydrated soups...as they don't require much storage space...you will need vitamins and calciums ...so stock vitamin pills and calcium pills...stocking iron pills wouldn't be a bad idea either

For your protection...
I recommend US military/Army version shotgun...it's light...fast reload...point and shoot

.22 pistol...better accuracy in closer range...and recoil isn't so strong...so anyone can handle this

12 inch bowie for close range combat...with fist guard is better

I probably missed something really important...but hell...it's too much work to get ready for a disaster...i will let fate do her job on me:)

::edit::
I knew it...ropes and duct tapes...LOL...yeah...ropes are pretty important

and raincoat for everyone

AgentSmith, that sounds like the Y2K list my neighbor had.

Did you know that there is now a brandname of duct tape called "Duck Tape"? That's one smart outfit, grabbing an already built brand.

tedster:

I think I've seen that "Duct Tape" you are talking about...does it have a standing cartoon yellow duck with a hat on the cover?

I am an avid camper, so survival techtics aren't foreign to me at all...::looking over my shoulder:: I am no parania case, I swear...hehehehehe:D

Yeah, I saw that somewhere --walmart? Any duct tape purist will tell you that you can't just can't pick up any ol' roll and feel confident that it'll secure the cab of your pickup truck to the chassis for another 100k miles. It's the amount of fabric in the tape and the quality of the adhesive that makes duct tape duct tape--not the silver color! If you can quickly tear a piece off the roll and not have it pull the fingerprint off your thumb, it's not the good stuff.

<added>
Oh, though Drastic will deny it, it's a well-known fact here in the US that any Camaro you see rolling down the road is likely to be better than 40% duct tape (by weight).

Funny they call the cloth/plastic stuff duct tape though. Put it on a heating duct and it cooks right off.

If you want actual DUCT tape, you get this nasty, razor sharp roll of paper-thin adhesive metal. That stuff isn't much good for anything but ductwork and maybe re-attaching your bumper though. ;)

Nahhhh, the last one I abandoned on the Outer Banks only used duct tape for engine mounts. Lots of masking tape, though, from when I re-wired it after a dash fire.

Well, getting back to the thread here, how is duct tape supposed to protect you from a CBR attack? If you seal up your house, won't you suffocate?

won't you suffocate?

You must have missed the part about using some of the plastic sheeting to turn your sun porch into a sealed semi-indoor greenhouse, and then stocking it with enough plants to produce the amount of oxygen your family will need in the event your house must stay thusly mummified for an extended period of time. :)

Camaros on the Outer Banks (a string of Atlantic coastal islands) are a special case --83% Bondo.

Just got in from walking the pooch and what looks like a mixed-bag HazMat team pulled up. About half are sporting state shoulder patches and the others have a patch I don't recognize on their baseball caps, but they all arrrived in US Gov vehicles.

But at least we know where our tax dollars are going! They each had brand spanking new ESU-type uniforms and new web gear. And I'm sure the cargo trailers they were pulling are filled with duct tape.

It's probably all in expectation of the 100,000+ people expected for a peace demonstration here Saturday. Other people are stocking up in case of emergency, we're stocking up so we don't have to go outside Saturday and get caught in the crowd.

This is when we really need a boondock!

It's gonna be time to move to Canada or Europe where they seem to be more sensible [news.bbc.co.uk].

In the mean time, just hope nothing gets unleshed around here. Even BJ's (great big wholesale warehouse) was out of the bulk water jugs. At least everything else was pretty well stocked.

Just woke up from quite a dream ....

Headline News reported that in a fit of mass hysteria, 30 million Americans had died of suffocation after sealing themselves in closets with duct tape.

Hans Bix reported to the UN that a clandestine factory was found in North Carolina. Said Bix "We followed our noses, it was a no brainer, Camaros and Ford Pickups were laden with the stuff from that duct tape factory".

:)

Apparently there was a mad dash for duct tape and plastic around here. All the big stores sold out.

Do people really think that is going to save them from anything. It might help keep the house warm if the heater dies but keeping out bio/chem stuff.....doubt it.

Well, it's the Y2K drill: a week's worth of food and water.

And we've added a C. Crane radio/light. You know, the one that can be powered by batteries, solar power, or windup. That will come in handy during those times we're snowed in.

As for duct tape and plastic: we already have shrinkwrap on the windows, but that's because it's a drafty old house, and -15 degree winds rushing through old windows costs the big bucks!

But I honestly don't see the point of sealing ourselves up in a "safe room." In order to actually protect us, the room would have to be air-tight, and if it were air-tight, we'd suffocate.

The plastic sheet/ duct tape / 3 days of water seemed contradictory. Three days seems awfully quick to secure an area in a bio attack, which is the only thing the plastic tape might help to stop.

bio or chemical gas released in open air would kill & dissipate quickly. (no time for duct tape fun)
released in closed area and you're toast anyway.

As to plastic sheeting and duct tape, NYC Mayor Bloomberg said "Preposterous!"

He did go on to say that both, used with discretion, can add quite a flair to a '68 Malibu SS convertible.

Finally, a voice of reason.

Okay, I'll admit it: I ordered a case of 72 MREs. Better safe than sorry...and with a 5-year expiration, we can surely use them for camping or something if nothing else.

I had to live off MREs for 2 weeks when I was in scouts. I hope you picked kinds you liked because there are some real gross ones.

I hope you picked kinds you liked because there are some real gross ones.

I have a daughter in the Army, and I called her to ask her advice. She claims pasta is less likely to be gross than beef, pork, or chicken.

We got a deal where we can pick 6 different ones.

We found some MREs in a house we rented for a while... technically, I guess they weren't expired, but after we opened them (call it morbid curosity) we fed the "Ham Slice, Chopped and Pressed" or whatever it was to the neighbor's dog...

The neighbor later told us that must've been what gave the dog gas for the entire week. Hehehe. The dog didn't seem to mind though, 'cause it came back the next day for the chicken. hehehe.

But if you're planning on eating them in a sealed house, I do hope the pasta is better.

I think there was a corned beef hash in ROTC. That was "good" as far as MRE's go.
