As we have discussed here before, the vast majority of WW users share a similar problem: We're all just too good looking. It gets in the way so often of trying to do business.

Therefore, I thought you would find it interesting to read this woman's story "Too hot to be a banker."

What is it about CitiBank? There used to be a teller at the CitiBank branch I frequent who I really thought could have had a side job in the adult industry. She always wore tops with plunging necklines.

I mean, you try so hard to be decent and not stare. But then you think about how it looks to be standing at the bank teller window with your eyes darting all over the place and start worrying you're going to be profiled as a bank robber...

After she was transferred to another branch, I started using the ATMs a lot more. Interestingly enough, when I do go into the bank these days, there aren't as many people there as before.

We're all just too good looking.

And that's just one more reason NOT to have avatars on Webmaster World! :)

I dunno. If we're going to have ads... our pictures on our posts would bring tons of traffic, no doubt.

And never once did they consider reprimanding or firing the men who "turned into complete idiots around her."

My wife, even at 50, has this exact same problem, and has had this problem in the workplace, they would make her go home and change clothes. I hope she sues them broke.

The other side of the coin, the whole sexual harassment issue is grossly abused, and many women use it to their advantage. That's a sickness too. But not this case.

Yeah, the whiskers thread was shocking enough. Now I know that 2/3 of the guys here on webmasterworld are a gazillion years old and look like a cross breeding of Abraham Lincoln and Billy Gibbons. Probably even voted for Lincoln and fought in the civil war.

For every case where a good looking woman has been fired for being too distracting, I'm sure there are at least a hundred cases where a good looking woman has been hired over a more qualified candidate purely based on her looks.

Cry me a river good looking women.

Would someone who really wants to be a banker pose for so many glamour pictures in a magazine?

When I worked in a bank I did know a cashier who was barely 5 foot tall with what must have been a tripple D cup. She said that a customer complained that he couldn't concentrate on checking his money when she rested them on the counter while serving.

and fought in the civil war

I am no spring chicken but I wasn't around in the 1660s! I am still not sure which side I would have been on, "romantic but wrong" or "repulsive but right".

This is ridiculous. I'm sorry but that's just what it is - plain ridiculous.

If these men can't control themselves and still function at their jobs then they're the ones that should be reprimanded and maybe even given some time off to undergo counselling. How do they act at the beach or the swimming pool for crying out loud? Makes me wonder.

Appropriate attire for the workplace should be a given as well. I don't really want to be staring at 4 or 5 inches of statuesque cleavage while making my banking transactions because if it's there I will probably stare at it. Knowing me I might even comment. This will in no way distract me enough to forget the amount of money I'm withdrawing, nor sidetrack me enough to the point that I don't count it again once it's in my hand.

I've worked in office settings with attractive women before. I am a certified admirer of the female form but in a very short time the newness and novelty wear off and these women became simply co-workers. I did my job and they did theirs. They look good and, possibly even more importantly, they smell good and personally speaking I was happy to have them around. Was I able to do my job? Of course I was. I wanted my pay check. Did I complain to anyone that these women were too attractive? Do I look like an idiot? Okay, well maybe I do but I'm really not.

1660's piatkow? Which civil war are we talking about?

1660's piatkow? Which civil war are we talking about?

That would be the English Civil War between the Cavaliers (Wrong but Wromantic) and the Roundheads (Right but Repulsive). The winners got to own America, at least for a while.

Being English, it was a more civil war than most and therefore a Good Thing.

@Samizdata 1066 and all That reference?

Back on topic:

1) Citigroup says they fired her because of her performance at work.
2) Men are expected to dress a certain way too for certain jobs- although if it is true that other women were allowed to dress the same way, then she has ben unfairly treated. That said, it looks from the article that the other women were more junior.
3) The evidence (from academic studies) is that, in general, being better looking generally helps in one's career.

No wonder Citibank needs to be bailed out.

Most companies have figured out that "men are pigs" in many cases and "sex sells". Citibank hasn't even grasped this basic concept.

They have a beautiful and intelligent employee and they get rid of her instead of giving her a new business sales rep job. Which IMO would have "rich pigs" lining up for new accounts just to be near this woman.

Seriously though the worst thing is that this is similar to repressive laws around the world where women are made to hide themselves because the men can't control themselves and aren't responsible for what they may do in the presence of a woman who may "tempt" them.

Citibank and those laws have something in common, and that is they believe that men can't control themselves around a beautiful woman and that IT IS UP TO THE WOMEN to change not the men, whom all seemingly have no self control.

Before she was fired they gave her a special dress code that only applied to her. No turtlenecks No Pencil Skirts and so on... such a sad commentary for equal rights.
