When I've had a long week or too much work, I like to read a good book...sometimes fiction I've read years ago and enjoyed. It's nice to meet familiar people again :)

How do you relax?

You mean I am allowed to relax?

Books, go out for a drink, play with the kids, play games (esp Battle for Wesnoth).

Go to Webmaster World and see all the problems that other people are having. :)

Actually, going to WW and helping FIX someone else's problem, especially if it's completely different from an issue I'm working on, is quite rewarding. Perhaps not relaxing, but it can be a minor stress reliever.

For serious relaxing, I like to do a major bike ride or hike. Just getting off the grid and away from everything helps clear my mind and re-energize. Besides the fresh air and solitude, whatever chemical compounds released during exercise do wonders to stimulate the brain.

I have this big padded rectangle that I lay on covered with sheets and a smaller softer rectangle that I lay my head on.

Swimming and tennis. Especially tennis frees the mind - I just can't thing about anything non-tennis when trying to hit the ball!

Every Friday around 8:00PM, me and my friends meet up at the Prancing Pony in Bree, and then headout adventuring to free the people of Middle Earth, from the grip of Sauron.

I keeping it to the one 3 hour session a week, to avoid the addiction of MMORPG.

I play with my dogs. That usually means jumping in the truck with a couple of tennis balls and a frisbee and heading for the lake. Dogs have a very basic, unwavering quality about them in that they don't care about crappy days or deadlines or impossible to deal with clients. None of that concerns them. In their world yesterday doesn't matter and tomorrow doesn't exist. They are completely in the moment and I can tap into that sometimes when I'm with them.

If the dogs don't work I just get drunk.

Playing drums is still my preferred mode of relaxation and meditation. Lately I've added some new percussion sounds - wood block, afuche/cabasa, cowbell, maple wood claves, and a one handed triangle. Assorted other shakers and sticks have also been added. Last weekends Saturday night drum circle was great. Not only did I have a variety of instruments to choose from, my friends were able to get in on the noisemaking merriment as well.

The ultimate drum event is coming up soon - the first week of July - and it's shaping up to be in the Allegheny National Forest. I'll be there with all my toys. After a week of almost non-stop drumming I'll be relaxed enough to face another year the weekly grind, such that it is :D
