This is a pretty ironic turn of events. Comcast must be kicking itself right now for having obtained that ruling on the torrent blocking stating that the FCC has no legal right to regulate broadband providers.

Well, the FCC is now giving itself back that legal right: [wired.com...]

That's only good news for consumers.

And it actually makes no sense to regulate phone lines in a certain way and broadband in another, considering that a lot of phone traffic is now directly over broadband networks, and within a few years the 2 infrastructures will be completely merged.

From what I've read about it, it sounds like a perfect compromise. The FCC keeps itself out of the internet's business in general, while still acquiring the ability to kick Comcast when necessary.

In an nutshell: Leave the web as is.

From the NYT:
[nytimes.com...]
The approach, (FCC's) Genachowski said, maintains the “status quo” and is intended to be “consistent with the longstanding consensus regarding the limited but essential role that the government should play with respect to broadband communications.”

You can pick on Comcast. They deserve it. But all of the major ISPs want more than their share.

This is good news. Hope it works out.
