My business is getting 2 or 3 of these calls a week and it's a scam. (What isn't these days?)
The hook is that after they gather generic info about your biz, they say they need to verify the info. Then they RECORD your response. DO NOT DO THIS! Later, they can show that they have proof of you placing the order for whatever scam they happen to be running that month.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, beentheredonethat

Yes, i've seen this many time before. Some try to scare the caller by saying, 'we have it recorded that you placed an order,' or 'a colleague placed an order.' They don't always record, and that's a scam, too.

They tried, unsucessfuly, to catch me out on one occasion. A pushy girl had all the answers but one really important one. They couldn't play back the recording.

In addition, I wouldn't put it past some of them to record your voice at the initial call and edit it to make it sounded like an order.

Never say the word "yes" in the conversation. They will edit the audio to make it sound like you placed the order for a $400 catalog.

They tricked one of our employees once.

They did play the recording for me and you could hear the edit. It was hilarious. I said I never heard "offer" in the conversation and only the "acceptance" therefore we do not have a legal contract and I will see you in court. Or, you can give me your UPS number or you are not getting the catalog back .. I had them over a barrel. So she coughed up the UPS account number and their address. I put the catalog in a box that was dimensionally over a 100 lbs. added all kinds of scrap steel from our factory and shipped it back UPS Express, early morning delivery!

Scamming the scammers is fun!

We get tons of them. Always check your company telephone bill. Scammers have major phone companies do the collection work for them. Tell the phone company you never authorized the charge and they'll delete it. They know their bills are full of scammy 3rd party charges.
