According to a new report released Wednesday, only 8 percent of online teens have embraced Twitter, a notable low for a generation so passionate about technology.
Twitter is not the best tool for keeping in touch with friends.
It is very good for exchanging news and ideas with people with similar interests.
Twitter is good if you have something to say to an audience interested in what you have to say, rather than in you.

Teens do "tweet", they just do it on Facebook.

How many different ways do they need to contact their imaginary friends?
Who really cares anyway? This trend towards tweeting and whatever the facebookers do is reality TV brought to mass communication. Life is too short to latch on to this appalling trend.

For teens, Twitter is "Like so last week."

My 14 year old step-daughter last week asked why I have a Facebook account. I explained why and she said I should just use Twitter like all the other old people.

I am amazed how often I read this.
Of course teens don't use Twitter - they regularly see all the people they keep in touch with! So they have their phone numbers! So if they want to send them a 140 character message, they text them using SMS!
Twitter enables common-interest communication between those who don't have much face-to-face contact.
Teens simply don't associate with people they don't regularly see face-to-face.
Nobody would use twitter if they had the mobile numbers of all the people they wanted to 'send a tweet' to.

This, and Facebook. Most teens already established a large group of friends where status updates and wall posts are the equivalent of Twitter. Why join another website when you've already have a friend list on Facebook?

What this should mean to us marketers is that if you try to market using social networking sites then Twitter may be a good place to focus seeing as teens, who often aren't the focus of our marketing, aren't prevalent on the site.
Leaving me with a conclusion that there is a greater percentage of people in my targeted demographic on Twitter.

In the village where I lived when I was young, there was this man who worked in the workshop for the handicapped. When he walked through the streets, he was always talking to himself mostly about what he was doing right now. I think you could call him the first "twitterer".
And that's probably the reason teens are not using twitter. They want to communicate with other people, twitter users only talk to themselves. Twitter is the Web 2.0 version of old people in the streets talking to themself.

The big difference between Twitter and SMS is an SMS is more likely to be read. Like jecasc mentioned, you might as well be talking to yourself. Especialy if your followers have a lot of other followers.
