Back long before Windows, I used a software tool that would allow me to do basic keyboard macros. (Anybody remember Framework? If so, please don't remind me what happened!)

Back then, this meant I could turn on a recorder, execute a series of keystrokes, turn off the recorder, easily edit the instructions, add simple logic if necessary and save it as a shortcut.

(in Excel) for example Shift-Ctr-end, Alt-A, Ctr-C, Alt-Tab, Ctr-V, Ctr-S, Alt-Tab would select data in a spreadsheet, copy it, move to the new spreadsheet, paste it and then save it, and bounce back to the original spreadsheet. Filters and logic etc made it real nice.

I felt like I was flying when I built and used these things.

This was massively helpful and cut way down on stupid keyboard repetition (and repetitive motion injury syndrome)

Then along came the mouse. Ouch. Welcome frequent visits to the physical therapist and chiropractor, with no easy end in site.

So, now, err, 15 or so years later, is there anything that anybody actually likes, uses, recommends that helps automate basic repetitive keyboard tasks?

feel free to mention freebies, demos, etc.

(posted here in foo as this gets the MOST traffic)

Mouse be damned, I still use most of the macros you listed for Excel. I guess there are really only two apps left where I use them... text editing and FTP (limited use).

what I'm looking for is a way to take several dozen keystrokes and turn them into 1.

by the way, previous attempts at using the record function in Excel seems way to complicated.

with macros, metaphorically, instead of playing notes, I'm playing chords or performing entire songs with just a few keystrokes instead of hundreds or thursands of them.

Faster, more efficient, and way less painful, and since I have to bill for my time, this leverages the power of the computer.

I still find it amazing that I had this tool 15 years ago and today it is not easily understood or available - unless I'm missing something...
