Bill and Melinda Gates announced today that their foundation will commit $10 billion over the next 10 years to help research, develop and deliver vaccines for the world’s poorest countries.

“We must make this the decade of vaccines,” said Bill Gates. “Vaccines already save and improve millions of lives in developing countries. Innovation will make it possible to save more children than ever before.”

All I can say is, "impressive".

And with the subject of excesses in the financial sector high on the agenda at Davos, Bill Gates suggested bankers with their big bonuses should travel to places ... and see what is needed for themselves.

Bravo!

Clean water probably has the potential to save more lives - certainly it is just as important as vaccines - then there are issues such as food, education, birth control, war, corruption, small cheap loans to encourage business startups, the list is endless.

Concentrating on vaccines is massively simplistic and means in many cases that misery will be postponed, and possibly amplified.
