Texting By Truckers and Bus Drivers Is Banned In US [reuters.com]
The U.S. government on Tuesday banned hand-held "texting" by drivers of large commercial trucks and buses to avoid the danger of distracted driving.

Nearly two dozen U.S. states ban "texting" while driving for all motor vehicles and others are considering similar action. Legislation has also been introduced in Congress to prohibit the practice.

Many U.S. companies also ban "texting" by their employees while driving on the job.

Eh! Surely, texting while driving any vehicle is dangerous. I don't know why they didn't go the rest of the way.

I would say that texting while driving is much more dangerous than talking on the phone as you need to look at the phone while typing (most of the time) rather than simply holding a phone to your ear.

I do agree the lot should be banned - save people from their own stupidity.

It's illegal to use a mobile phone at all while driving here in the UK.

People will continue texting regardless. That's why they need to come out with some sort of voice recognition texting for a hands free approach.

the american way to use federal laws to control personal behavior is to "get the camels nose under the tent".
it usually starts in a limited and obvious way by banning the biggest "weapons" (trucks) or "saving the children" (buses).
before long responsible adults will have to wear a helmet to text-walk.

I would like to see the figures for the number of accidents caused by using mobile phones compared to the number caused by fiddling with the radio/tape/cd player and also compared to the number caused by talking to or arguing with your passenger. I would take a wild guess that the phone would be the least likely to cause an accident. Whatever next, this nanny state "health and safety" dominated mind set will be the downfall of the western world, they'll be telling us we can't have sex whilst driving next!

I would like to see mobile phones requiring a license which has both financial and justification requirements. If only those who really really need mobiles have them then their safety problems will disappear overnight.

People will continue texting regardless

They do over here, despite it being illegal. As traffic policing is done by speed camera rather than by real cops they usually get away with it although police do check phone records after a serious accident.

The end of society as we know it is near. When the Government has to pass laws to prevent people from playing Russian Roulette, you know we are doomed to some degree.

If I had 80,000 pounds of honkin steel behind me and the driver was Texting? If you know me, you won't want to be in the car with me if I see that happening. I'll stop right there, get out and hope that he doesn't have a weapon. Even so, I'm going to taunt the schmuck and make a spectacle of the situation.

Have any of you seen the Texting While Driving PSA? It WILL make you cry, I don't care how cold your heart may be. Search YouTube for Texting While Driving PSA and prepare yourself. If I had teenagers, they'd have to watch videos like this if I felt there was a need to intervene and get a message across.

It is the difference between "laws" and "regulations." The U.S. Department of Transportation can issue a new regulation that covers drivers of commercial vehicles because Congress gave them that authority long ago. HOWEVER, the USDOT can not make a regulation covering drivers of private vehicles in this instance because they do not have the necessary authority. Rather congress would have to enact a new law that banned the practice. Remember in the U.S. only legislative bodies (e.g. Congress and state legislatures) can create laws. Government agencies only publish regulations based on the authority given to them via laws passed by the legislative body.

And those so called "responsible adults" will still bump into and knock down frail old ladies who are just trying to cross a street! Whereupon the "responsible adults" will no doubt be pi$$ed at the old lady for getting in their way and not paying attention.

responsible adults

Responsible adults don't text while driving. So the regulation must be directed at irresponsible adults.

I'm no fan of over-legislation, but in what universe is it even remotely sane to take your eyes off the road to read/write text messages while you're actively driving a piece of machinery that can kill you and/or any number of other people in an instant?

I'm in the USA and I'm appalled that there's a need to TELL people not to do this. Seriously!

Responsible adults don't text while driving.

Wholeheartedly agree, but next time someone you know is talking on the cell or texting while they are driving, try telling them they are irresponsible.

The laws are for the rest of the stupid idiots, not me, I'm responsible.

(Figurative "me," I still refuse to own a cell, wife has one and when it rings, she pulls to the curb.)

Regs/laws should only be a stop gap. The convergence of technology and human behavior requires a completely different solution.

Really. What would that be?

My opinion is that it requires a complete ban.

Get caught violating that ban and you get a healthy fine. Get caught again and you get a more healthier fine.

Get caught 3 times and it's off to the pokey with your texting butt...

That's MY different solution.

I wonder how often this actually happens in the first place. How many people really take a hand off the steering wheel AND their eyes off the road while driving?

Also, does the US have any laws under which this could be illegal anyway - I am thinking of something like the British law that makes "driving a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place without due care and attention" an offence.

Finally, if someone doing this did cause an accident, it would be criminal negligence of some kind, right?

Even using a handheld phone while the engine is running is illegal in the UK. Texting is even worse than making a call when you are driving...yet many people still do it.

A young lady was killed on a motorway near Basingstoke a couple of years ago. A lorry driver was found to be texting while driving and didn't notice that the traffic had stopped up ahead. He hit her car and the rest is history :(

Illegal? No problem, get a laptop with a mobile connection and email instead. You can even watch a movie to pass the time while driving.

That was very high profile case here in the UK and it tells you all you need to know about this. It kills!

I like this law and glad we have it here. I have seen somebody texting while driving on the highway a year ago and could not believe they were that stupid. So apparently the law is required.

I can't speak for anyone else but here in Southern California, Respect for the Road is severely lacking. Even with all the new laws, people continue to use their mobile phones, text, etc. And now we have the car manufacturers bringing the home into your automobile with in dash wide screen displays, not to mention all the other gadgets they've been adding to your field of vision. Heck, I think Microsoft is going to own that market. ;)
