Weird Stories of 2009

Here's a few of my favorites covered on Reuters

...top list of weird stories in 2009 [uk.reuters.com]

In New York, five "restroom ambassadors" got jobs tweeting from the toilets at Times Square: greeting tourists and shoppers -- and then sending short dispatches on their encounters.

The spread of new media got people in trouble. Dutch muggers were caught with the help of a Google street view camera.

A vain British burglar sent a picture of himself to his newspaper because the wanted criminal said he did not like the police mugshot.

Balloon Boy [mashable.com]

6 year old flying solo over Colorado in balloon...

This story has a happy ending. The parents were fined for the cost of manpower (11K to 14K - depending on the source) and are spending time in jail with probation. The fate of the boy is unknown.

I think the balloon story was a hoax.

It was a hoax. It didn't start getting really weird until after the balloon landed, and Falcon mis-spoke during an interview. From that point on it was just plain weird... at least until sanity returned and the parents were held responsible.

Of course, had I read the Reuters list before posting, I would seen the story already there... GMTA, how weird is that?

I suppose I could make amends by posting a link to the story of the drunk that called 911, looking for a ride to the bar. He went to jail instead. Weird? ... naah, that's just stupidity.

For me, one of the weirdest was the Tree Man story of 2007 / 2008 (who in 2009 is looking better as he continues to undergo operations to remove the rootlike growths from his hands and feet).

Now from Down Under comes the Human Coral Reef Man - who is also apparently undergoing successful treatment.

Originally I was skeptical of these due to the rise of photoshop type scams - but I'm pretty sure these are real.

I watched a TV documentary here in the UK about the tree man. This is very real.

I think the balloon story was a hoax.

A bad hoax at that...but I have heard about a 'UFO' flying over Moscow recently...
