California Sets New Standards For TV Energy [latimes.com]
The California Energy Commission votes 5-0 in favor of the nation's first efficiency regulations for televisions of up to 58 inches sold in the state. The stricter rules take effect Jan. 1, 2011.
"It's absolutely undeniable the benefits that this has for the people of California," said Commissioner James Boyd, an economist and former chief executive of the California Air Resources Board. "Efficiency is the cheapest and simplest way to save our citizens money, to provide a good quality of life and to drive our economy."

<smugness ahead>One of the things I did do when the old TV packed up earlier this year was to read up about energy useage. That's why I ended up with a new TV that uses less energy than my old CRT model.</smugness ahead>

Well done. I still have a CRT which works perfectly, but I am thinking of upgrading. I would like to think that I could select a low energy TV, but the decision may still come down to price.

My 15+ year old CRT TV caught fire. Luckily, I was in the room when it happened.
Hold off the purchase as long as you can as the newer models are much more efficient, and the latest developments are giving considerably better images.
